Pick your target audience.
When marketing in general, it is always important to know who your target audience is, so you can focus on marketing to that particular segment. If you own a local high-end coffee shop, you’re probably going to focus on business professionals who can afford to pay for a cup of premium coffee. This target audience might be very different from a local retail store or entertainment venue. It all depends on your product or service and who you’re trying to reach. Social media allows us to reach a variety of targets with different networks, so it is important that you use the most effective social media platform to reach your desired audience.  

Decide which social media platforms will reach your target audience.
We all know Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. are popular social media sites that people use to connect and communicate with people daily. Many though, do not know that each particular social media platform has a different audience. As a matter of fact, Facebook’s fastest growing demographic is women over the age of 55, and when looking at Twitter’s demographics, college students make up the largest percentage of users. In deciding which social media platforms will be important, it is crucial to know the demographics of social media platforms so you can choose the one most suitable for your business.

Create posts with awesome content using the 70/20/10 Rule.
The 70/20/10 rule is an effective formula for creating a variety of different kinds of posts that focus on different objectives within your social media strategy. People won’t follow you if you post about yourself or your business all the time; therefore, you must come up with other engaging content that will draw in new followers and keep your current ones around. According to the 70/20/10 rule, 70% of your information should be building your brand and supporting the lifestyle of your audience. For example, you could be posting things such as behind-the-scenes office photos and jokes. The 20% of your content should be cross-promotional type content such as tagging clients, supporters, community members, neighboring businesses etc. The last 10% is where things get interesting! This percentage leaves room for innovation and self-promotion. Try something new and maybe you will gain some new followers or increase your reach and engagement. Also remember to tell, don’t sell!
