As of September 1st, Google announced that Chrome will block all Flash content that isn’t “central to the webpage.” This means that any Flash content such as ads, or auto-playing videos on non-video websites, will be paused by default. This is a huge deal for advertisers since 90% of rich media ads use Flash, and over 50% of all internet users, use Chrome as their browser. Google stated the biggest reason for the change is to improve customer performance for the users.
What this means, is that time is running out for Flash and Flash development. Eric Franchi, the cofounder and chief evangelist at ad tech company Undertone, has told business insiders that publishers should start making their way towards using HTML5 as soon as possible. Some of the main advantages of HTML5 over Flash are the fact that a Flash file cannot run on certain iOS devices such as an Iphone or Ipad, and HTML5 apps run 58% faster than Flash apps. Another main advantage of using HTML 5 is the fact that it does not drain your computer battery like Flash does, which goes back to Google improving customer performance.
The fact is, HTML5 is becoming much more popular with companies for all the previous reasons mentioned. Aside from Google, sites such as Firefox and Amazon have also blocked all Flash ads from running. Fortunately, this move from Google will mostly benefit the consumers, but not so much the advertisers. This is going to be a big change for a lot of companies and you should expect to see companies transitioning from Flash over to HTML5 in the near future. This not only affects companies and advertisers, but consumers as well.
