Nearly 40% of the world’s population (over 3 billion) have access to the internet. That means there is a huge amount of people who can fall victim to cyber crimes. Millions of dollars are spent every year by people and businesses to help prevent being attacked, but every now and then they still fall victim to a cyber attack. Lucky for you, there are ways to help protect against these relentless attackers. Here are three simple ways to help protect your digital security.
Password Protection- Passwords are one of the quickest and easiest ways to help increase your digital security. Some things to think about when creating a password is having a password that is at least 7 characters long, a word that is not easy to spot while typing, using upper and lower case letters, and also using things such as numbers, punctuation marks, and symbols. It’s also important that you NEVER write your passwords down, so use a password that will be easy to remember, but not easy for someone else to figure out! Things can be done such as capitalizing the first letter, every other letter, or something similar to that, just make sure it is memorable.
Install an Anti-Virus Program– One of the most important ways to increase your digital security is to have an anti-virus program installed. The best anti-virus programs can prevent 99.99% of known viruses. With a quality program installed, your computer will be protected from from viruses, spyware, spam, and even pop ups. If infected with a virus, there are a number harmful things that can happen to your computer such as running slowly, personal information being stolen, or you could be used as a host to attack other machines.
Back Up Your Data- No matter how many security measures are taken, sometimes a computer will run into problems. The last thing you want to happen is your computer crashing and you lose all of your important data such as emails, documents, contacts, etc. This seems like a scary scenario, but luckily there are ways to safeguard against this happening. There are several ways to backup your files such as exporting them to a storage device or backing them up to the cloud. This may seem like a tedious task, but backing your data up regularly will save you a lot more time in the long run.
These are three ways that can help protect your digital security. Using strong passwords, installing a good anti virus program, and backing up your data, are just a few ways that can help keep your digital security safe.
